Raga Samay Chakra

Raga Samay Chakra

This Hindustani classical Raga is heard at the crack of dawn. The time when darkness is giving way to the first brush stroke of sun seeking to peek tentatively to see if people are still relishing the last dregs of their dreams. So Raga Bhatiyar is a raga you listen to as you are still in bed, in that half asleep half awake state. Almost like what the first day of the calendar feels like. A little hazy as you still dwell on the last year gone by before you wonder what lies ahead as the year unfolds. This raga is unhurried. It is a raga that is full of hope.https://youtu.be/NAsVUI2GX90Try this rendering by Kaushiki Chakraborty who has done an amazing rendition of Bhatiyar.https://youtu.be/PsXWOBNb-VEAR Rahman (who turns 45 on 6th Jan 2011) has done this haunting composition from the film Water based on Raga Bhatiyar. Naina Neer Bahaye sung by Sadhna Sargam has that slow lilting feel that marks the beginning of the day. A trace of pathos seeps through as the lovers prepare to part for the day. But this raga has a trace of hope even in separation that the lovers will meet again. Like this song here.https://youtu.be/qwU0PuFIUP8After listening to that film music version of Bhatiyar, you will enjoy this short piece on the sitar by Pandit Nikhil Banerjeehttps://youtu.be/S7dyWpe3VAQA look at the Samay Chakra tells you that Raga Bhatiyar and Raga Lalit (see my post Waking Up To Raga Lalit) are both Ragas that are sung at the break of dawn. When you listen to this version sung by Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, you can hear a Raga Lalit Bhatiyar combo.https://youtu.be/BqOU-L5YpmUHave a year that is as tranquil and peaceful as Raga Bhatiyar. Check out when to listen to which Raga through this Samay ChakraIf you like Bhatiyar, you will also love Raga Ahir Bhairav <click here>

  6. Abhijit, Thanks for the brief but brilliantly informative post. This gives just the enough information for an enthusiast to start exploring :)It was Kavita Krishnamurthi’s rendition in “purab se surya uga” for Rashtriya Sakhsharata Mission that set my curiosity — and that’s how I came to discover this lovely raaga!http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Va_ml6k7_Fk
