RD Burman passed away on 4th January 1994.  That year saw the release of 1942 A Love Story, a score that was to get him one of his three Filmfare awards for Best Music Director. He got nominated 17 times for the award that eluded him. While we mostly associate a more western sound with RD, I think of him as a composer who simplified the most complex Hindustani classical music and made it accessible to the masses. That is the true yardstick of expertise.

The trivia for this article is thanks to my friend and film music historian Ganesh Ananthraman. He has written the eminently readable book Bollywood Melodies : A History of the Hindi Film Song

Here are the ten terrific raga based compositions of RD that are my favorites:

Ghar Aaja Ghir Aayi Badra (Raga Malgunji )

This song comes at the top of my list for many reasons. This is from RD Burman’s first movie as a music director – Chhote Nawab (1961). RD wanted Lata Mangeshkar for his first song, despite knowing that his father SD Burman had not worked with Lata for six long years following a rift. RD sent word to Lata through Jaidev (who was SD’s assistant) and in the process mended fences between SD and Lata. And it is one of the best compositions in Hindi cinema that explores the charm of  Raga Malgunji

O Ganga Maiyya (Raga Jogiya)

The year was 1967 and RD’s youthful mega hit score for Teesri Manzil (1966) was still ruling the airwaves. Trust RD to surprise fans and critics alike by tuning a composition based on the morning raga Jogiya for Lata and filmed on Meena Kumari in Chandan Ka Palna (1967). The song was a nominee for best classical composition of that year in the prestigious Sur Singar Samsad award! That RD did not get it is beside the point. Early enough in his career, RD’s classical leaning was apparent.

Raina Beeti Jaaye (Raga Todi & Lalit)

Pancham said in an interview that as long as SD lived, his weightier compositions were always attributed to his dad by other composers in the industry. The exquisitely tuned ‘Raina Beeti Jaaye’ for Amar Prem (1972) is a case in point. RD fused two ragas Todi and Lalit  in the song expertise that had hitherto been attributed only to his father SD Burman. Anand Bakshi’s lyrics blend with notes of this song to create a magical feel if you listen it at the break of dawn.

Beeti Na Bitayee Raina (Raga Yaman Kalyan)

Beeti Na Bitayee Raina’ in Parichay (1973) was an early pointer to the special tuning that would emerge between lyricist-director Gulzar and Pancham. Set to the notes of evening raga Yaman Kalyan, the Lata-Bhupinder duet fetched them both a national award for best playback singer that year, besides fetching Gulzar the best lyricist award. That RD did not get the best composer award for the same song is but one of those mysteries of Bollywood.

Mere Naina Sawan Bhadon (Raga Shivaranjani)

Raga Shivaranjani  is an ideal one to depict pathos. RD used this song twice in Mehbooba (1976). Kishore Kumar and Lata have both sung this RD Composition. I love this version by Kishore Kumar just a little bit more. Who will ever believe that Kishore Kumar had no training in classical music? In fact, this song lends credence to RD’s publicly stated view that Kishore was a complete singer, even for classical numbers. Make up your own mind by listening to Mere Naina Sawan Bhadon in the voice of Kishore Kumar

Hai Agar Dushman Zamana Gam Nahin (Raga Kalavati)

RD did not favour Mohd Rafi for some unknown reason, despite Rafi having given RD his first big hit in Teesri Manzil. Though Kishore was RD’s preferred male playback, Rafi appeared in RD’s films intermittently, the songs more often than not becoming hits. For the alaap in the beginning of this raga Kalavati based qawwali, in an otherwise Kishore dominated score, RD knew he needed Rafi. Listen to Raga Kalavati flow in the voice of Rafi and Asha

Piya Baawri (Raga Behag)RD’s wife Asha Bhosle has gone on record to rue that even RD reserved his best compositions for Lata. It is true that RD relied on Asha more for his experimental music and on Lata for his classical numbers, but here is a surprise where Asha sings an authentic Raga Behag based composition by hubby RDB with aplomb. Don’t miss the tabla ‘bols’ by Ashok Kumar himself in the soundtrack

Hamein Tumse Pyar Kitna (Raga Bhairavi)

Kudrat (1981) was written and directed by Chetan Anand. RD had composed a song Hamein Tumse Pyaar Kitna based on the morning Raga BhairaviParween Sultana and Kishore Kumar did a solo version each of this song. Kishore Kumar was nominated for a Filmfare Award for his rendering of the song, while Parveen Sultana walked away with the Best Female Playback Award from Filmfare for her version of the song.

Hamein Aur Jeene Ki Chaahat Na Hoti (Raga Asaavari)

RD may have been down in the 1980s with many of his films not doing well, but he was certainly not out. Proof of this is the title song of Agar tum Na Hote (1984) in the morning Raga Asaavari, which appears twice in the film in the voices of Kishore and Lata. Like in the case of many of their tandem songs, the Kishore version has a slight edge over Lata’s, possibly because of the weight in Kishore’s voice

Kyon Naye Lag Rahe Hain (Raga Khamaj)

The evening raga Khamaj happened to be RD’s favourite and most often used raga. This song in 1942 A Love Story set to Khamaj happened at a time when RD’s confidence as composer was at an all-time low, but the tune doesn’t reflect that at all. Kavita Krishnamurthy sounds as fresh as Manisha Koirala looks on screen, in what turned out to be RD’s swan song. Khamaj is a raga best enjoyed as the sun sets. This song was released posthumously after he suddenly passed away on January 4 1994. The song is a fitting tribute to the genius that Pancham truly was

I had interviewed Brahmanand Siingh. Filmmaker Brahmanand Siingh made a really insightful film called Pancham Unmixed about RD Burman . The film is a seamless narrative about this music composer who made almost 300 albums in his lifetime. Brahmanand Siingh also made”Knowing Pancham” to coincide with RD’s birthday. <Read that> Watch a clip from Pancham Unmixed and think of the adulation and influence RD enjoys even today.

  1. Ah……nice for someone to write about the greatest Indian composer there was!Forget the AR.Rehman’s and Jatin Lalit’s.One could sit through torturous Indian films just to appreciate R D’s brilliance.Critics said he elevated the films itself and boy, were they right!Wish he had lived longer…….

fantastic Article on my fav. Music Director RD. I always consider Rd as the Master of Sound. Please accept” Are Suno .. Haan Kaho… Kaha… Suna… Kuch Hua Kya… Abhi To Nahi… Kuch Bhi Nahihttp://youtu.be/ykcAV7V8LjgR D Burman ; Anand Bakshi ; Kishore Kumar, Lata MangeshkarRajesh Khanna & Mumtaz..RD and team were in a quandary over setting the meter for this song.. There was an old table fan in the room which was whirring interruptedly due to a fault in one of its blades.. however it was a systematic interruption.. RD picked up the timing of the breaks matching the interruptions and tuned “Suno..[break]…. Haan Kaho… [ break]….Kaha …. [Break] … Suna….” and later at “Chaali Hawa… Ruuki Ghata…. Kuch Hua Kya….”The song starts with the notes of a Church Organ .. Its a western orchestration however in the softer moments e.g. between 0.51 and 1.03 RD has beautifully used Sitar pieces to match the mood. a mail I wrote as a small contribution from my end on this subject”

Sashi – glad we share the admiration for RD.Anand – thanks for that piece and the story.Monica – what a lovely collection . Thanks. There is hardly a composition by RD I don’t like. Awesome list.

  5. Abhijit, way back in 2002,during a memorable trip to Delhi,I had the good fortune to come across and buy a ten-CD collection of RD Burman’s greatest songs simply called ‘Legends’.Was put out by Sa Re GA Ma and till date has remained one of my favourite collections – never too far from my CD player. It is mandatory purchase for any RD fan and I am sure a check at any good music store in Delhi or Mumbai will get you this CD.To mention any one song would be taking away from the beauty of any other song that I wouldn’t mention.Sparkling scintillating songs that will bring you back beautiful memories, drib, drab of tears too perhaps.A gem of a collection that brilliantly shows the stamp of individuality that RD left behind.RD,we love you,you left us bereft but you left your gems behind to break our hearts. And Abhijit we love you for giving us this beautiful dose of nostalgia.Be well,my good friend.

Nicely compiled list, Abhijit…And who can forget “Chingari Koi” with a highly subtle flavor of Bhairvi ? And in the last few weeks, I have been fascinated by my rediscovery of “Jaane Kya Sochkar Nahin Guzra” involving the classy combo of Gulzar-RD-Kishore where RD so elegantly mixes shades of Kedar and Kalyan into an otherwise modern sounding composition…Truly versatile !

Sreepathy – Chingari and of course Jaane Kya Sochkar are gems. I had taken a song from Amar Prem already and that had a raga combo. Hence wanted to pick some other raga based gems.

There is so much to admire about R D Burman: his music, his madness and above all his love and respect for his musicians (most of who stuck with him through his entire journey). I would add another Amar Prem song to this list: Kuchh to log kahenge, which is so well written (and beautifully sung) that it’s almost a mantra of life for me. Pity that Amar Prem did not win a Filmfare for RD!

  10. hi, does any one know that the song Tum ageya ho noor ageya..Andhi movie song, which Ragga based?thanks

  11. Hi Abhijit,Love your blog – just stumbled upon it accidentally as I searching hindi songs in Khamaj. I grew up listening to RD in 70s – Panchamda was way ahead of his time.Curious to know the Raga of “Raat Kali Ek Khwaab main” (Buddha Mil Gaya I think).Have you posted on these Raagas? (Keervani, Ahir Bhairav, Tilang and Bhairav).Cheers

    1. Kartik – thanks for stopping by.I have posted on a few ragas. The titles are the same: Eg The Charm of Raga Desh or The Charm of Raga Jaunpuri, Malgunji, Bhairav… to name a few@AbhijitBhaduri

Dear Mr Abhijit,Beautiful article. I just wanted a clarification. Isn’t the song “Kyon Naye Lag rahe hain” from the Movie 1942 A LOVE STORY by Kavita Krishnamurthy based on Rag Desh and not Khamaj as you mentioned. That was my impression. I am a Bangalore based music lover and singer but am not equipped with necessary knowledge of identifying Ragas. Depend on others assessment for the same. But my music sense allows me to compare two songs to be on Similar Ragas or not.Regards,Rishi

  13. Well u discussed all RD greats but i do have few for ur knowledge aapki ankhon me kuchh kya hua tera vaada aaja piya tohe pyar dun bahon me chale aao tujhse naaraj nahi zindagi melodious maine poochha chand sedo require a mention ok

  14. RDB once told my father was and will be remembered as a Great MD but he agreed to his papa i would like to do some thing mixture of classical and westernised melody he was considered as an ERA cumes to an END said by Majrooh in his thought about RDB he was way ahead of time in making musical hits this is the reason his songs are played on most music channels We miss u RDB sahib ji

  15. RD Burman was a mixing room GENIUS — There used to be a photograph of him posing with his mixing unit that Kersi Lord had on his website. I am still in search of that photograph if someone can fwd it to me, thanks in advance. As for his aversion to the voice of the great Mohammed Rafi, there were two reasons for this.1) All his compositions were Kishore Kumar CENTRIC. He stated this fact on KK’s demise. He said he did not know how to compose music for any other singer. He was outdated pretty fast after Kisohore Kumar.2) Mohammed Rafi was a full range singer, Kishore Kumar was a baritone singer with no modulation and little range. Rd’s entire life was focused around KK and how he mixed his voice post recording to superstardom post Aradhana. Mohammed Rafi’s voice did not fit Rahul Dev Burman’s style of music. This was the bottom line. Even the songs Mohammed Rafi did do for RD were in that same slow croon style of singing that was then enhanced in the mixing room. This left Mohammed Rafi shattered. Try watching the youtube video of Mohammed Rafi’s last song for Naushad and you can hear Naushad narrate this fact (without naming RD by name), check out the videos on my youtube profile associated with my email if you want more hands on on this matter

Sanjay Singh,I have seen your videos you have merely slowed down all the tracks and distorted the vocals in the process, even the background music is slower. You think anyone is fool? to believe in your made up nonsense. You have even disrespected RAFI’s songs by distorting them like a coward. Despite my anger towards your actions, I still agree with your analysis of why RD preferred KK over the greatest RAFI. KK’s voice did require post mixing and was enhanced in the recording room which is why RD tunes were KK centric as the man only had basic singing abilities and he was made to sing even difficult semi classical numbers, despite all of RD’s efforts to get his favourite untrained singer to render these difficult songs many of the songs could not get the justice they deserved. RAFI was a gifted versatile singer who could modulate to any mood, genre or pitch. Your right in this regard, but your false theory of slowing and speeding up is 100% impossible as all music directors, actors and singers would have exposed such a far fetched conspiracy if it has existed, there ere many evidences that prove you are deceiving and lying to people.

RD composed some songs based on Carnatic music raagas also. I would like to know on which Raaga the Manna Dey song ‘Aao Vango’ of Padosan is based. My own guess is that it is based on Raaga Shriranjini.

Sir, in your another blog you wrote…Pancham used to merge two ragas effortlessly. He had heard his father sing a song Bela Boye Jaye which stayed in his mind during the composition of Raina Beeti Jaye for the movie Amar Prem. The song is a mix of two ragas – a morning raga Todi in the mukhra and raga Khamaj, a late night raga. Now you wrote in this blog …..The exquisitely tuned ‘Raina Beeti Jaaye’ for Amar Prem (1972) is a case in point. RD fused two ragas – Todi and Lalit in the song expertise that had hitherto been attributed only to his father SD Burman.Which one to be believed? Are raag lalit and raag khamaaj same?

    1. Doc – the correct response is Todi and Lalit. Thanks for pointing that out.
